Job Responsibilities:
- Managing and prioritising resources to ensure an appropriate balance of proactive and reactive communications activity across the media and external communications team to ensure long-term objectives are met.
- Monitor trends in media relations and ensure that best practice is identified and applied.
Consultancy, analysis and problem solving - Lead the provision of expert media advice for crisis communications, ensuring that crisis management, media risks and issues are effectively managed and mitigated.
- Advising senior leaders in all key communications including managing reputational risk and ensuring external communications plans are in place.
- Provide expert advice on training and development on media relations and crisis communications within the organisation.
- Lead the development, implementation and embedding of a media relations and external communications strategy and plan to enhance the British Council’s profile, ensuring alignment and integration with the Communications strategy.
- Responsible for developing and delivering the proactive external communications strategy including Corporate Communications, PR, Media Relations, and Events.
- Lead the provision of an on-call media relations service, providing expert advice and managing media activity out of hours.
- Manage the provision of strategic and tactical media relations advice and activities ensuring that messages are consistent and support the overall business strategy.
- Ensure that media risks and issues are effectively managed and mitigated.
- Increase the British Council’s share of voice in global media.
- Ensure that media relationships are effectively managed and media opportunities are maximised.
- Monitor the effectiveness of media relations strategy, planning and activities, and lead the identification and management of improvement opportunities.
Job Requirements:
- Demonstrable experience in managing and mitigating significant media relations risk and issues
- Deep understanding of external communications disciplines including strategy and crisis management
- Experience of leading an external communications function within a large and complex organisation
- Degree or professional qualification in journalism or communications or similar levels of equivalent experience
